Dean Akira TokuhiroI welcome you to the Faculty of Energy Systems and Nuclear Science.  If you are a new or returning student, or are contemplating joining one of our programs, congratulations!  If you are just visiting our website to learn more, please feel free to explore and contact us with questions that you may have.

Energy systems and nuclear science are interesting, challenging and important areas of study, presenting significant employment opportunities in a variety of technical areas for engineers and scientists. In brief, we strive to continuously learn and understand the safe, reliable and efficient generation of environmentally-conscious  energy. The forms of energy include fossil, hydro, geothermal, nuclear, solar, wind and emerging technologies such as energy storage. Electricity is perhaps the main “product” of energy. However, there are many applications of  nuclear technology and radiation, encompassing the environment, industries (manufacturing), radiation protection, regulation and public health. Energy is a large-scale challenge for humankind as is often linked to climate change.

UOIT’s location (Oshawa) is particularly advantageous to this area of study as the surrounding Durham Region features major nuclear generating sites and the corresponding technology-based industries that support energy production, both nuclear and non-nuclear.  UOIT is the ideal choice if you have an interest in energy and have an enthusiastic interest in pursuing a challenging career.  Thus if you are interested in physics, chemistry, life-science, mathematics, data science, the environment, radiation safety and security one of our programs may indeed be right for you!

You may be interested to know that we currently offer the following undergraduate degree programs:

  • Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Nuclear Engineering
  • Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Health Physics and Radiation Science
  • Bachelor of Engineering and Management (Honours) in Nuclear Engineering and Management

We have also offered:

  • Bachelor of Applied Science (Honours) in Nuclear Power (Bridge program)
  • Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Energy Systems Engineering

In addition to undergraduate programs, we also offer Graduate diplomas in a variety of topical areas.  For those interested in higher education, we offer Master and PhD programs in Nuclear Engineering in the fields of Nuclear Power and Radiological Health Physics.  Our graduates have gone on to work in industry, government (including R&D), international agencies and universities. 

UOIT offers the only nuclear engineering bachelor program in Canada, and one of a select group in North America.  Being situated within proximity of most of the commercial nuclear power stations in Canada gives you unique opportunities for education, training and subsequent employment in the greater nuclear sector.  With our modern facilities, world-class researchers with a wide variety of academic and industrial experience, and state-of-the-art equipment (including an on-campus simulator), you will not only gain on-campus knowhow but learn how the nuclear and energy sectors put concepts in practice.  Your studies will provide you sound fundamentals, experiential learning in our laboratories and encourage you to contribute to innovative research and analysis. Opportunities for longer-term industry internships will also facilitate your learning process and prepare you to enter the workforce with “savvy”.
