Accreditation
The Nuclear Engineering undergraduate program has recently completed an accreditation review process. Note that this was the second time since the program was initiated that it has been reviewed for accreditation. The purpose of this process is to obtain assurance that the program is providing sufficient knowledge in the areas of basic maths/science, engineering science, engineering design, and sufficient complementary studies to produce a well rounded engineer that meets Canada wide standards. The process examines not only the courses, but the supporting programs such as labs, library resources, space, student morale, Faculty morale, etc.
We are pleased to say that our program has received accreditation valid for 6 years until June 30, 2016. This remarkable achievement is the maximum amount of time allowed for an engineering program and reflects the high quality of the program, students, Faculty, and our University.
In person or online, students invited to open house for nuclear programs
Students with an interest in pursuing a graduate degree in Nuclear Engineering or a graduate diploma in Nuclear Technology are invited to visit in person or log on for an open house that will share details about UOIT's leading-edge programs.
Hosted by the UOIT Faculty of Energy Systems and Nuclear Science, the open house is Wednesday, April 29, 2009 from 7 to 9 p.m., in Room 1140 of the Science building. The session will share admission requirements for the Master of Engineering in Nuclear Engineering and Nuclear Technology graduate diploma programs, options for course and research project selections, and demonstrate the planned use of distance education technology. All the courses will be offered in the traditional classroom format and live via the Internet, and archived for viewing at any time following each lecture.
To register for the open house, please e-mail kerry.armstrong@uoit.ca and indicate if you plan to attend in person or by accessing the presentations and discussions via the Internet. The web address and password to access the open house's website will only be sent to registered participants.

Nuclear Design Laboratory Hockey Tournament
On January 5th, 2009, the first ever Nuclear Design Laboratory Hockey Tournament was held. The FESNS Alumni led by Dave Zekveld, sent out the following challenge to the undergraduates:
"As alumni, we have the responsibility to mentor and guide these young ones. Part of this responsibility, at times, requires showing the next generation who's boss and that we have the skills and knowledge to back it up. Dr. Harvel has recommended, and I fully concur, that being a Canadian university we ought to show these 'kids' a thing or two on the ice. That's right, we will prove ourselves as not only intellectually superior, but as better hockey players as well."
The undergraduate team, led by Richard Scrannage responded with "I accept this challenge. I know this will be a simple victory for my undergraduate men and women. We will demolish your measly alumni team."
Both teams fought for the right to be named on the coveted trophy. The Alumni won the game by a margin that is still under dispute, as all good games should be. The Most Valuable Player for the Alumni was Spencer Gill with his excellent defensive play. The Most Valuable Player for the Undergrads was Dan Hobbs whose awesome defence in net ensured the margin of the win was quite small.
The after game party also went extremely well, although a few might have been late for their evening class. Those interested in being Captains for next year's tournament should contact Dr. Harvel before September.
